We have an excellent opportunity for a Planned Giving Director in our Planned Giving Department, to be based in the metro area of PA, NY or NJ.

The Planned Giving Director designs and implements the planned giving program for the national center including formation of an overall strategic plan and its implementation. This includes marketing planned gifts and the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects/donors as appropriate. This position will also identify staffing and volunteer needs for the program while directing resources to achieve annual objectives and income goals.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Follows up on all leads received by the American Heart Association offices in Central and Southern New Jersey, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and the National Center from individuals requesting planned giving information.
  • Develops a plan for identifying and qualifying the most promising leads in order to make the best use of time and efforts. Upon qualifying, telephones and obtains appointment with the most promising prospects. Also tracks all prospects and donors and supplies calculations when requested.
  • Supplies information and reviews estate and estate plans with the prospect in hopes of obtaining a gift for the Association. Recommends specific estate planning actions to achieve goals and meets with donors’ estate planner or financial advisor as appropriate.
  • Develops an annual planned giving marketing plan to generate leads that also includes a component to evaluate the various marketing techniques. Works with the National Center Planned Giving Staff to coordinate and implement cultivation and solicitation of Marketing Resources Center prospects.
  • Makes presentations on gift planning ideas at one or more affiliate board meetings each year.
  • Trains local staff and volunteers as appropriate on estate planning strategies.
  • Identifies volunteers and staff to be involved in the cultivation and solicitation process.
  • Establishes and maintains information in Siebel including those of planned giving donors, prospects, volunteers and estate planning professionals.
  • Conducts necessary follow-up with attorneys and other allied professionals regarding bequests and other planned gifts to the affiliate as appropriate. Also provides consultation and information regarding estate and tax planning, estate administration and charitable giving as necessary. Candidates must remain up-to-date on all tax law changes as they relate to charitable giving.
  • Attends at least one professional conference annually, budget permitting. Subscribes to and reviews suggested books and periodicals.
  • Attends local Planned Giving roundtable or Association of Fundraising Professionals meetings as appropriate to reaching annual goals and objectives.
  • Works with affiliate staff to coordinate planned giving program activities with other organizational efforts and approaches to identified priority prospects. Keeps appropriate staff and volunteers updated on activities and progress as necessary.
  • Implements standard procedures for the tracking of planned giving income.
  • Reviews legal documents related to planned gifts as needed.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have the following experience and background:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years experience in planned giving; formal training in estate planning and planned giving, working knowledge of intestacy laws, federal estate tax, federal income tax and state inheritance taxes, and estate planning strategies.
  • Successful proven record of completing planned giving agreements through personal interviews; public speaking skills and good communication skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of deferred gift and estate planning vehicles.
  • Thorough knowledge of planned giving fund raising and demonstrated skills in donor relationship building and stewardship, conducting effective sales/solicitation calls and effectively closing/sales solicitations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the process of identifying prospects for planned giving, prospect/donor cultivation processes and planned gift vehicles is necessary.
  • Working knowledge of general business principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully implement planned giving strategies.
  • Ability to develop and present training programs in the area of planned giving.
  • Ability to travel throughout the assigned territory 50% and attend trainings and meetings outside the state as necessary. A willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
