Morning Session (11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
“Storytelling as a Theme”
Even in the Age of Google™, certain stories become far more than information and attract our attention. Is it the nature of the stories themselves, or the way in which they have been crafted that makes them so captivating? This session will define:
• The concepts used by authors to transform a reader into someone who is mentally experiencing their story.
• How these elements translate into stories about philanthropic giving that are directed to audiences of various sizes.
• Ways in which the right visual components, design features and multi-media ingredients give the stories a final polish.
We all have important stories to tell. This session will help you understand how to effectively get these stories about your organization’s mission and its donors out into view.
Luncheon Program (12:30 – 2:00 p.m.)
“Charitable Giving in Uncertain Times”
On January 1, 2010, the federal estate tax was repealed for one year. In its place is a carryover basis regime and a lower gift tax rate of 35%. On January 1, 2011, the federal estate tax is scheduled to come back with a vengeance, with a $1 million exemption and a 55% top marginal estate tax rate. Moreover, the economy continues to struggle, asset valuations are down, and the “Bush tax cuts” are set to expire at the end of 2010. How will these factors affect charitable giving in general, and planned giving in particular? Which planned giving techniques will be more attractive to donors in this environment, and which will be less attractive? In this session, our expert speakers will address the current and anticipated transfer tax regimes, discuss their effect on popular gifting methods such as outright gifts, bequests, and CRUTs, and give a legislative update on what — if anything — Congress intends to do about it.
